With the advantage of science we always expect that we should live our life to its fullest. But we face so many congenital and acquired disease condition which leads to disability or become differently able. As a human being it’s your right that you should get a holistic rehabilitation to minimize your limitation and maximize yours functional abilities. This is possible when an Occupational Therapist is part of rehabilitation team, who will take care of activity of daily living (ADL) like dressing , brushing along with your occupational need.
Occupation is not only an involvement that provides money. If we carefully look our daily routine then we take part in different activity like self care (eg; eating, grooming), work which is productive and provide some earning resources and leisure (eg; travelling, listing music, socialization. Any task you perform during a particular day that’s falls under these three categories. Occupations are the essence of productive living and Occupational Therapists focus on the occupations accomplished by people to live full, independent lives. Occupations or activities of daily living include work, self–care, and leisure.
Occupational therapists work with persons to endorse an individualized balance of occupations right through one’s lifespan. Occupational performance is developed and improved by treating the “entire person” and attending to physical, psychological, emotional, social and cultural issues, as influenced by the situation. Treatment is based on purposeful activity that requires physical and mental involvement of those being treated. Occupational Therapists should focus on “doing” whatever occupations or activities are meaningful to the human being. It is occupational therapy’s purpose to get beyond problems to the solutions that guarantee living life to its fullest. These solutions may be through adaptations for how to perform a job, changes to the environment, or helping individuals to correct their own behaviors.
According to World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT), 2004, Occupational Therapy is a profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational Therapists achieve this outcome by enabling people to do things that will enhance their ability to participate or by modifying the environment to better support participation.
Occupational Therapy is practiced in a wide range of settings, including adult day care centers, day treatment centers, home health agencies, community rehabilitation programs, community mental health clinics, clubhouse programs, outpatient psychiatric clinics, foster care residents, sheltered workshops, group and private homes, community support programs.Clients are actively involved in the therapeutic process, and outcomes of Occupational Therapy are diverse, client-driven and measured in terms of participation or satisfaction derived from participation. Now a question may arise in your mind that how can you find an Occupational Therapist? You may be referred to an Occupational Therapist by your doctor or specialist, or other health care professional or any rehabilitation professionals. How can you ensure the quality of services from an Occupational Therapist in India?
