Rehabilitation is well known word for many people basically who are working as community health worker. It’s become very challenging when they work with differently able or physical challenged. Occupational Therapist play a vital role, when we are talking in terms of holistic rehabilitation then you can not ignore a role of an Occupational Therapist. Because when a disable person comes to any center for rehabilitation then it’s their right to get intervention to perform activity of daily life (ADL) like eating, drinking bathing etc as well as plan regarding return to work. Occupational Therapist can fulfill all rehabilitation need from beginning of your rehabilitation phase to return to your productive life.
Occupational Therapy a treatment methods that focuses on helping people achieves independence in all areas of their lives through different technique. According to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), in addition to dealing with an individual's physical well-being, occupational Therapy practitioners address psychological, social, and environmental factors that may hinder an individual's functioning in different ways.
Now a question may arise in your mind that who can use an Occupational Therapy services. A person who is suffering a condition like birth injuries or birth defects ,sensory processing/integrative disorders , traumatic injuries (brain or spinal cord) ,learning disorder , autism , juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, mental health or behavioral problems ,broken bones, orthopedic injuries developmental delays ,post-surgical conditions ,burns , spina bifida ,traumatic amputations ,cancer ,severe hand injuries ,multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson’s Disease , Myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome , Huntington’s Chorea and other chronic illnesses.
Occupational Therapists offer purposeful, goal-oriented activities that teach and facilitate skills like assertiveness, cognition (e.g., problem solving), independent living including using community resources, home management, time management, management of medication, and safety in the home and community, a vocational interest and pursuits, self-awareness , interpersonal and social skills, stress management, activities of daily living (e.g.; hygiene), role development (e.g., parenting),self-sufficiency and interdependency to overcome the functional limitation of a person.
An Occupational Therapist can work in different sector like hospitals, schools setup, rehabilitation centers, mental health hospital, private practices, Pediatric clinics, nursing homes and industry set up. Though Occupational Therapy is essential treatment modalities and without it a rehabilitation procedure is not able to fulfill a person needs, after all many health setup not providing this service to their client in India.
In India an Occupational Therapist should be registered under all Indian Occupational Therapist Association (AIOTA). An Occupational Therapist graduate who completed his four years course along with six month compulsory internship become eligible to register for practice in India. Master degree also available with specialization like child health, neurology, orthopedic etc.
27 October, 2009 is International day of Occupational Therapy. In this day we can wish that all needy people should get Occupational Therapy service in Government as well as non government sector. At present very few state run government hospitals had Occupational Therapist. The state like Haryana, Bihar already passed proposal to appoint Occupational Therapist for betterment of differently able persons. In the occasion of Occupational Therapy International day, it will be expected from government to equip the hospitals with Occupational Therapy facilities.
