Handicap International is an international organization specialized in the field of
disability. Non-governmental, non-religious, non-political and non-profit making, it works
alongside persons with disabilities & other vulnerable groups, whatever the context,
offering them assistance and supporting them in their efforts to become self-reliant.
Since its creation, the organisation has set up programmes in approximately 60
countries and intervened in many emergency situations. It operates as a federation
made up of a network of eight associations (Belgium, Canada, France, Germany,
Luxembourg, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA) which provide human and financial
resources, manage projects and raise awareness of Handicap International’s actions and
campaigns.
In India, Handicap International (HI) supports actions towards a barrier free and
Inclusive society for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable people. Handicap
International has been working with some State Governments & Community based
Organizations/ NGOs to implement Programmes in India since 1988. The liaison office of
HI-India is based in Delhi.
JOB CONTEXT
HI, is taking up a project titled Improving humanitarian assistance to persons with
disabilities through increased access to quality physical rehabilitation services in the
state of Chhattisgarh. The project will be implemented in the district of Dhantewada with
an objective to strengthen comprehensive physical rehabilitation services and access in
the area; increase community awareness on the disability issues and on various schemes
and entitlements; sensitize different stakeholders including Community Based
Organizations on issues of physical rehabilitation and promote inclusion

JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Project Disability Manager-Chhattisgarh, the project Occupational
therapist will be responsible to implement outreach / community based rehabilitation services
including therapy, follow up, training etc; contribute towards setting up & follow up of the Beneficiary
follow up system for the Outreach.
Main Tasks:
Therapy
1. Identify individuals (all age group) in need of rehabilitation, conduct initial
assessment, and provide appropriate occupational therapy/basic rehabilitation
services.
2. Maintain good collaboration and coordination with physiotherapist colleagues,
particularly in terms of client treatment and follow up. 2
3. Identify and organize/facilitate referral to appropriate internal (e.g. Physical
Rehabilitation Centre) or external (Hospital, State level hospitals, other Rehab
Centre) identified institutions.
4. Develop education material to be distributed to beneficiaries and their families and
transfer basic skills to family members to ensure proper care of the beneficiaries
and to minimise the risks of secondary complications and to prevent disability
5. Provide training to mothers and caregivers of children with disability on basic
home based therapy, assistive devices and activities of daily living (group and
individual sessions)
6. To follow-up and arrange appropriate discharge of all patients in a timely manner
Aids and Appliances
1. For people requiring aids and appliances, identify, order (in a timely manner) and
provide the appropriate items
2. Provide training on aid or appliance use to the person and his/her family
3. To support the project Disability Manager in training community animators on aids
and appliances
4. Follow-up provision of aids and appliances by animators and ensure appropriate
use
5. Undertake appropriate design and modification of aids and appliances, and of
home environment based on specific individual and home/camp context.
Reporting & Coordination
1. Respect all guidelines of documentation within the project
2. Keep data records for each patient seen using the standard format
3. Write case studies (and support the project team to do the same) on beneficiaries
and activities of the project
4. Write regular activity and progress reports, including compilation of statistics
5. Support the rehabilitation trainer in carrying out monitoring and evaluation of the
project activities to ensure expected results are being reached and activities are
implemented according to the work plan
6. Regular collaboration with implementing partners, health facilities and other
organizations/authorities as required
7. Maintain a positive and neutral image of Handicap International at all times and in
all circumstances.
EXPECTED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Academics & Experience
1. Bachelors Degree (Regular course) in Occupational Therapy from accredited
University
2. Minimum 3 yrs experience, preferably with INGO/NGO. Experience in CBR is
advantage.
3. Experience of working in emergency/conflict context is desirable
4. Good training/facilitation skills
General
1. Good organisation & adaptive skills
2. High level of flexibility and strong interpersonal skills 3
3. Frequent travel to remote areas
Language: Fluency in English and Hindi (written & verbal) is essential.
Salary and Benefits:
The gross salary will be in the range of approx INR 30000 - 34000 per month to be
determined on the basis of previous experience and performance in the test / interview.
Benefits such as medical reimbursement for self & dependents; accidental insurance for
self; hospitalization insurance for self & dependents are applicable in addition to the
salary.
