Introduction
In June, 2014 there will be a special issue of Occupational Therapy International on clinical
case studies in occupational therapy using experimental prospective designs.
Scope
Evidence-based practice is becoming the standard for the health and medical professions. In
occupational therapy there is a need for documentation of effective treatment. Clinical case
studies can be used to explore and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions that are commonly
used in occupational therapy such as sensory integration, splinting, assistive devices, pain
management, cognitive retraining, and work rehabilitation as well as complementary methods
such as yoga, stress management, prescriptive exercise and constraint –induced movement
therapy. Different from experimental group research, clinical case studies often allow for more
individualized problem identification as well as client-centered treatment planning and outcome
measures. The results of these pilot studies can also be used to replicate more extensive clinical
research.
Manuscripts are especially welcome in the following areas:
1. Single subject prospective studies applying an occupational therapy intervention.
2. Meta-analyses of clinical case studies in a specific diagnostic area such as stroke.
3. Clinical case studies that critically evaluate the efficacy of a treatment intervention.
4. Single subject designs that use a case control or the subject as his or her own control.
All manuscripts will be expected to:
Identify and operationally define the intervention, apply standardized and/or client-centered
assessments in evaluating outcome and use screening criteria for subject selection. The
manuscript should abide by the Occupational Therapy International referencing style. Author
guidelines can be found under the “For Contributors” section:
